What effect does quitting have on mental health?

A 2014 review of many studies showed that quitting is associated with improvements in depression, anxiety, stress, psychological quality of life, and positive affect. This occurs in both the general population and those with mental health disorders. We don’t know that smoking cessation directly caused the improvement in mental health, but smokers can be reassured that stopping smoking is often associated with mental health benefits.
