You've now entered a period of physical and mental readjustment. The 'step down' approach makes the physical transition (from smoker to non-smoker) more slowly, and allows you to gradually wean off nicotine, the addictive component. If you smoke more than 10 cigarettes, use the 21 mg patch for six weeks; then switch to Step 2 (14 mg) for 2 weeks; and end on Step 3 (7 mg) for 2 weeks. If you smoke 10 or fewer cigarettes a day, use the 14 mg patch for six weeks and then switch to the 7 mg patch for 2 weeks.
