Quit Q&A

Need help?

Why do I have a sore throat?

The widespread effects of chronic smoking can include increased mucus secretion and chronic airway inflammation resulting in a sore throat. The sore throat may continue as the body heals itself after you quit, but within a few weeks, the symptoms should improve. Gargling with warm salt water can be an effective way of diminishing the soreness and speeding the healing. If your symptoms do not seem to improve over a few weeks or you experience hoarseness, see your doctor to be sure nothing more serious is causing the symptoms.
