NRTs can help maintain quit-motivation. Motivation is a prime component of a permanent quit. Motivation can't be manufactured at will, especially in the face of a 'will' that is addicted and thus determined to proceed with addiction behavior. It must be attained by a process of change. This change begins when the smoker first questions the validity of a smoking lifestyle, and continues through a number of clinically-defined stages. Moving towards, and alternately away from, the point of motivation, is a process that every ex-smoker has gone through (though they're not usually consciously aware of it). By making withdrawal more manageable, NRT's help motivation stay high.
